For early beginners, Matcha is a nice Hangul game to get you started with memorizing the characters and how everything stacks together. Probably combining inspiration from games like 2048, and the Korean language’s block-like structure. The game helps new learners play with and understand the writing system a bit more.

Match and Memorize Hangul Game

The Korean language builds out sort of like stacking blocks with consonant-vowel, or consonant-vowel-consonant combinations. Such as in 먹습니다, the first 2 blocks have 3 characters ‘mok’ and ‘sub’, and the last 2 have 2 characters ‘ni’ and ‘da’. (There is a special rule why the b in mok-sub-nida sounds like an m, but no stress, you’ll get into that later!)

So in-game, you will take each consonant and vowel block to combine together into one. ㅁ +ㅓ + ㄱ=먹, and so on. There are hundreds of levels to go through, with no internet connection required.

Now, please note: the app is about making these block combinations, not every prompt they give you will be a real Korean word. The focus is more on being comfortable with Hangul and how the language comes together. I do hope they add that in later as a feature though!

Matcha is a fully paid game from what I can find, hosted about anywhere you could want: Apple and Google app stores, itch.io, and Steam. The prices vary on the platform, so pick which fits you best!
